Mirla Avila, MD, FAAN

Neurologist & Multiple Sclerosis specialist

Dr. Mirla Avila is a board-certified neurologist specializing in Multiple Sclerosis and Neuroimmunology, bringing over 15 years of focused expertise to Grove Neurology. She completed her MS fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine and her neurology residency at TTUHSC, where she founded and directed the Comprehensive MS Care Center — one of the region's only dedicated MS programs.

As former Associate Professor of Neurology and Interim Chair at TTUHSC, Dr. Avila has spent her career at the intersection of clinical care, research, and medical education. She has served as principal and co-investigator on clinical trials for some of today's most widely used MS therapies, with research presented at AAN, ECTRIMS, ACTRIMS, and CMSC.

Dr. Avila has a particular interest in MS and neuroimmunological disease in Hispanic and Latino populations — an area in which she has published and presented extensively, and one that is deeply meaningful to the South Florida community she now serves. Fluent in English and Spanish, she is committed to providing culturally connected, personalized care to every patient.

At Grove Neurology, Dr. Avila sees patients with Multiple Sclerosis, NMOSD, MOGAD, and other autoimmune neurological conditions, as well as a broad range of general neurology concerns including memory disorders, neuropathy, pain, tremors, seizures, headache and migraine, stroke, and more.

Salvador Sánchez Vega, MSN, APRN, FNP-BC, is a certified Nurse Practitioner at Grove Neurology with a remarkable medical career rooted in neurosurgery. Prior to immigrating to the United States, Salvador earned his Doctor of Medicine in Havana, Cuba, where he specialized in and practiced as a Neurosurgeon for over 10 years. He continued his neurological career in the United States as a Surgical House Physician of Clinical Neurosurgery for the Baptist South Florida Health System before joining Grove Neurology.

Since joining Grove Neurology in 2024, Salvador has flourished under the mentorship of Dr. Lerman, developing a focused clinical interest in the care of patients with acute and chronic neurological conditions, including memory disorders, movement disorders, lumbar and cervical degenerative spine conditions, Attention Deficit Disorder, and neuropathic pain conditions. Working closely with Dr. Lerman, he provides ongoing, comprehensive care for patients navigating these complex conditions. Together, they function as a dedicated team committed to ensuring that every patient is closely monitored throughout their care journey — conducting thorough examinations, managing medications, and remaining readily available so that nothing is ever overlooked and patients receive the attention they need, when they need it.

With the rapidly evolving landscape of therapies for cognitive impairment, Salvador has developed particular expertise in the management of monoclonal antibody treatments, guiding patients through these complex protocols with precision and care. He also serves as a sub-investigator in the practice's clinical trials, working alongside Dr. Lerman to connect patients with neurodegenerative diseases to cutting-edge therapies before they are widely available. His research contributions span the development of Alzheimer's biomarker testing, novel pharmacological therapies for mild cognitive impairment, and emerging treatments for Parkinson's disease and Multiple Sclerosis.
