Dementia Q & A

Dementia isn’t a specific disease but a general term that describes changes in a person’s memory, cognition, and social abilities that interferes with their ability to manage their day-to-day life.

Dementia is more common in older adults, but it’s not a normal part of the aging process. There are many conditions that cause dementia; however, Alzheimer’s disease is the most common.

The signs and symptoms of dementia vary and may depend on the underlying cause. Common symptoms include:

  • Memory loss
  • Difficulty finding the right words
  • Hard time communicating
  • Problems with reasoning or judgment
  • Confusion and disorientation
  • Difficulty handling complex tasks
  • Changes in visual or spatial abilities
  • Personality changes
  • Depression or anxiety
  • Inappropriate behavior
  • Paranoia or hallucinations

If you or someone you love is showing signs of dementia, schedule a consultation at Grove Neurology. Some causes of dementia are treatable and reversible, such as nutritional deficiencies, especially when identified early.

Diagnosing dementia requires a careful, thorough evaluation to understand what’s causing changes in memory, thinking, or behavior. At Grove Neurology, we begin with a detailed clinical assessment that includes medical history, neurological examination, and cognitive testing. From there, we may use advanced tools such as MRI brain imaging, lab work to rule out reversible causes, and biomarker testing—including blood tests or PET imaging when appropriate—to identify the specific type of dementia.

Because many conditions can mimic cognitive decline, our goal is to provide clarity, an accurate diagnosis, and a roadmap for next steps. With a precise diagnosis, we can tailor treatment, support families, and help patients access the most effective therapies available.

Our approach to dementia care is comprehensive, personalized, and based on the specific type of dementia a patient is experiencing. Treatment plans vary depending on whether someone has Alzheimer’s disease, Vascular dementia, Lewy Body dementia, Frontotemporal dementia, or Parkinson’s-related cognitive decline — and we tailor every plan accordingly.

We combine established cognitive therapies with modern disease-modifying options, including monoclonal antibody infusions, such as Kisunla or Leqembi, for eligible Alzheimer’s patients. We also focus heavily on educating patients and families about lifestyle modifications and evidence-based supplementation that support brain health — including sleep hygiene, cardiovascular management, nutrition, exercise, cognitive stimulation, and targeted supplements when appropriate.

Patients are followed closely with regular visits to monitor progression, adjust treatment, and ensure that both the patient and their caregivers feel supported every step of the way. Additionally, as an active clinical research site, we are continuously opening new clinical trials, bringing access to tomorrow’s therapies today. To learn more about current open trials click here
