Neurophysiology plays a crucial role in diagnosing and managing disorders of the nervous system. At our practice, we offer advanced diagnostic testing including Electroencephalography (EEG), Electromyography (EMG), Nerve Conduction Velocity (NCV), evoked potentials, studies, and Prolonged Video EEG Monitoring. Electrodiagnostic Medicine Q & A

An EEG records electrical activity in the brain and is commonly used to evaluate seizures, epilepsy, and other neurological conditions. It’s a painless, non-invasive test that helps detect abnormal brain wave patterns.

Prolonged Video EEG involves continuous brain wave monitoring paired with video recording over several hours to days. It is especially helpful in diagnosing seizure disorders and differentiating them from other events like fainting or movement disorders. We offer this service both in-office and as an at-home study, so patients can stay in a familiar setting while we gather high-quality diagnostic data.

EMG assesses muscle activity by recording electrical signals during rest and movement. NCV measures how quickly nerves transmit electrical impulses. These tests are often performed together to evaluate nerve and muscle function.

Evoked potentials are noninvasive tests that measure the brain's electrical responses to specific sensory stimuli—such as visual patterns, sounds, or touch. EEG and video EEG are painless. EMG and NCV may cause mild discomfort, such as brief muscle twitches or tingling sensations, but they are generally well tolerated.

For EEG or video EEG, arrive with clean, product-free hair and avoid caffeine beforehand. For EMG/NCV, wear loose, comfortable clothing to allow access to your arms or legs. We’ll provide specific instructions before your appointment.

Routine EEGs take about 30–60 minutes. EMG/NCV studies can take 45–90 minutes depending on the complexity. At-home video EEG monitoring usually lasts between 24 to 72 hours, depending on your provider’s recommendation. Most patients can resume normal activities immediately after testing.
